We are ALL ABC Superstars!! We had a great day of learning and celebrating all of our hard work during the month of September. We did a little "Dirt Dancing" and rewarded each other for all of the wonderful things we \'ve done this month. Lots of students received a prize from the treasure chest, we all make dirt cake and showed off our best dancing.
Parents, check out the back of your child's award to see how many days they had at...
My Shirt-Superstar (silver)
ABC Superstar (red)
Great Work (orange)
Good Day (yellow)
Ready to Learn (green)
Think About It (blue)
What are the ABC's? (purple)
We celebreated all of those days we had a "good day," "great work," "ABC Superstar," and "Off the Chart" (on Mrs. Wall's shirt). Please recognize these accomplishments and take some time to read the letters they wrote you today at school.
Blessing of the Animals will be this coming Tuesday. You can bring your pet in the morning to have him/her blessed but they must leave directly after the blessing. All animals must be contained or on a leash to come to our ceremony. If you can't bring your pet, bring a picture! We love them all.
Our Book Fair is coming to school! The students have a flyer from the upcoming Book Fair that will start this coming Wednesday online (following at school the next week).
Our Walk-a-thon is coming soon! Please complete your forms as soon as possible and return them to the office. Thanks so much!

RUN A LITTLE
Run a little this way,
Run a little that!
Fine new feathers
For a fine new hat.
A fine new hat
For a lady fair-
Run around and turn about
And jump in the air.
Run a little this way,
Run a little that!
White silk ribbon
For a black silk cat.
A black silk cat
For the Lord mayor's wife
Run around and turn about
And fly for your life!

HOMEWORK: Complete your HRL for tonight. You should be reading for at least 20 minutes each night and responding to your reading on your purple HRL.
Practice your addition flashcards we made in class today and bring them back to school tomorrow. We are starting Ice Cream Math tomorrow!!! Are you ready? Tell Mom and Dad all about it while you are practicing tonight.
Visit www.raz-kids.com and www.mathletics.com every night as well. Read or listen to one book (or more) and do one activity (or more) at www.mathletics.com. You all have your current usernames and passwords in your Take Home Folders for both of these websites.
Conferences are coming soon and there have been many students who are not completing these things every night. Your progress report has already been affected by these incomplete assignments. The best way to become a better reader is to...READ.
Congratulations to those of you have started out your second grade year with the responsibility to complete assignments on time and return your things to school.
Parents, please visit School One to sign up for your conference time for the week of October 11th. Remember when you are signing up that your child is required to be present during their conference in second grade. Please plan accordingly. I am so excited to meet with all of you and celebrate all of the successes your child has already had in second grade!
ABC Superstars: We are celebrating our ABC Superstars for the month of September with a little "Dirt Dancing." It has been a great month with so many things to celebrate! We have been working hard to keep our space clean and listen carefully to directions.

NEWS: Thank you for all of your early donations for our Winter Warmth Service Project today! We have almost met our classroom goal already! We will be presenting again on Friday, October 7th. If you did not get to participate today, either by bringing something warm for Emily, or speaking, you will get a chance at some point throughout the month of October. I already have the list of people who told me they would like a speaking part. Please let me know if you have changed your mind about speaking at the Morning Assembly.
Donations for our Winter Warmth Service Project can be brought to school on Tuesday mornings, starting in October. If you would like to wait and bring yours for our next presentation, that is okay too.
We started Guided Reading and Literacy Centers today! Hooray!! It was a great first day for our second graders! Congratulations on a job well done students! Parents, are you wondering what this is? Winter Warmth Service Project
Hi Second Grade Families,
Tomorrow morning we will be presenting a short skit to introduce our Service Project, "Winter Warmth." We will be making announcements about this service project throughout the month of October. This is a shared project with the third grade class. The announcement schedule between the classes will be as follows:
9/26-2nd (Mon.)
10/3-3rd
10/7-2nd (Fri.)
10/17-3rd
10/24-2nd (Mon.)
As I talked with the students in class on Friday, each student who would like to participate, will get a chance at least once throughout the month. As for tomorrow...
Emily will be our "freezing friend" who is in need of some "winter warmth."
Kate will inform everyone of what to donate.
Connor will tell them what we are aiming for.
Alexis will tell everyone when this starts.
*Each time it's our turn we will do a similar announcement with updates and different students from our classroom. I'll let you know when it's your turn, if you want to participate by speaking at the Morning Assembly.
ALL STUDENTS, FOR TOMORROW: If you are planning to bring something to keep Emily warm (to donate) tomorrow you can also be a part of the skit! When Emily comes out of the classroom and stops on the grass in front of the student council you can come up and help her put on ONE item that you brought. I'll go first so you can see what you should do, but remember what we practiced in class on Friday aslo. We need to start with the smaller things first, so take a look at what you brought to donate and watch to see when a good time to add something would be. We want to keep adding items to Emily until we can't see HER at all, only the things that she is wearing because so many people have donations to give her. When you are ready to give her something, walk up to the front after the last person and say something to her as you put it on. You could say something like, "I hope this keeps you warm." or "I hope you'll be warm with this." or "I hope this helps!" Be creative with what you want to say. After Emily thanks you or replies to your donation, please say "YOU'RE WELCOME!" nice and loud so ALL can hear!
Don't worry if you can't make a donation tomorrow. We will be doing this service project the whole month of October, so you have plenty of time to find that Winter Warmth you are willing to part with.
Thank you,
Mrs. Wall

How do your choices effect your life? How do your choices efffect the lives of others around you?

Tomorrow is our Jubilee Kickoff!!! We are having an assembly in the morning and will be receiving our Jubilee t-shirts. The students will wear them at school tomorrow and if they do not have 80's clothes to dress up with on Friday, they are welcome to wear their Jubilee shirts with their uniform bottoms. The other option is a full uniform if your child does not plan on dressing up in 80's gear.
80's Outfit Ideas: "Yes to Excess"
NEWS: New Parent Coffee is FRIDAY! Please join us in the Parish Hall at 8:15am.
Wine and Cheese Night-Saturday Night
BBQ and Swimming-Sunday Morning 11-2
HOMEWORK:Gather your 80's gear for Friday's Decades Dress-up Day.
GRADING: I have begun compiling complete homework and in class assignments from the students. EVERY NIGHT your child will have their TAKE HOME folder with any homework. Please assist them in learning how to become responsible with their folders, notebooks and homework. There were MANY students who did not complete the homework over the holiday weekend (one page of Math). I'm hoping this will become a routine in every home, so all of our students come to school prepared and ready for the school day.
You are the best model of responsibility for your child. Please be consistent in the routines you help them set up each afternoon for homework and reading. This will help them be successful in school everyday!
If you did not receive a "TEST" email from Mrs. Wall within the last two days please email jwall@saintlawrence.org with your correct email.
FUNDRAISING: Bring Sally Foster sales tags in during lunch tomorrow to receive a prize, play PLINKO, or test your luck in the "Tornado of Cash".
Our Luck of Saint Lawrence Lottery tickets went home today. Please return any money and sold ticket stubs to the elementary office. The first drawing is soon!

Colombian Pen Pals
As many of you may already know, I lived in Colombia (South America) for two years, where I taught second grade. Mr. Wall and I taught at an International School called Colegio Panamericano in Bucaramanga, Colombia. It was an amazing experience and we are still connected to Colombia in many ways. Last year Mr. Wall's fourth grade class became pen pals with some of his former students.
This year in second grade we are planning to have pen pals of our own! We will be writing letters to some of my former students at Colegio Panamericano. Each student in our class will have a pen pal who they will write to. In the beginning we will write the letters in class and I will scan their letters into an email which I will them send to one of the teachers at Colegio Panamericano, who will then share the letters with each pen pal in Bucaramanga. Throughout the school year we will be learning how to type on computers and will eventually type these letters to our pen pals. All communication will go through Mrs. Wall and the teacher (Miss Kathy) at Colegio Panamericano.
What to Expect:

What to Expect:
- we will be writing one letter each month to our pen pals
- we hope to learn about the lives and culture of students in Colombia
- how our lives are the same and different from these students
- any information we share with these students is private between our classes and their families
- we will share things about our traditions, culture and everyday lives
- we will compare and contrast the experiences we have as students
- we will evaluate the writing process as we compose our letters
CA Standards we will be working on through this experience:
- Social Studies-2.3 Students explain governmental institutions and practices in the US and other countries
- Writing Strategies-1.1, 1.2, 1.4
- Writing Applications-2.2
- Written and Oral English Language Conventions-1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8
By writing these letters in class the students will have the opportunity to write, revise, edit and publish letters to a friend who may have many similar life experiences to them (and hopefully some different as well). At the beginning of each month we will share what we are learning about in school, pose questions to our new friends to learn more about them, and answer questions that have come from previous letters.
Each family has the opportunity to participate in this project or decline participation. Please contact Mrs. Wall directly (jwall@saintlawrence.org) if you would not like your child to write letters for this project. We will begin this writing project this week in class and send our letters via email (Mrs. Wall will send them all) at the beginning of next week.

Happy Birthday Keala!!!! I hope you have a wonderful birthday! You have a week to work on your Star Student News at home with your family.
Thank you Lorin for being a wonderful Star Student this week!
HOMEWORK:
SPELLING: Use your Sight Word Pretest to practice the 10 words Mrs. Wall circled for you in class. If you got less than 10 incorrect, only practice those. This is YOUR spelling list for the week. Please save your pretest because you will need to return it to school on Tuesday.
MATH: Choose any four 2-digit numbers (10-99) to write in four different ways. (Do not write numbers we did in class that you already have written in your notebook.) Use the tens and ones mat like we did in class. You have an example stapled into your notebook. All numbers must be spelled correctly because you have them ALL written in your Math notebook.
WWW.RAZ-KIDS.COM: Log in to your reading account and start reading! If you did not bring your Take Home folder to school today you will receive your username and password next time you bring your folder. Mrs. Wall will glue your information in your folder. (Just read from your library books instead.)
RELIGION: Please take some time this week with your family to discuss the Prayer Sheet from your We Believe workbook. If you do one small activity or prayer everyday this week, you will have completed the activities.
EVERYONE needs to read for 20 minutes everyday, especially on weekends. Reading is the best way to become a better reader! We all visited the library today so everyone has something to read. Happy reading!!
No school tomorrow (9-2-11) and no school on Monday (9-5-11). Enjoy the long weekend!
Thank you Lorin for being a wonderful Star Student this week!
