5. Religion-Check out this website sometime this week and think about what you have given up for Lent. What are you giving up? Why? You don't need to write anything down, but I would like you to be ready to share this out loud, before Friday with the class. http://www.loyolapress.com/assets/lp/stations-of-the-cross-powerpoint.swf
Please read the following to get some ideas about what you will be giving up or have already chosen to give up for the Lent season. http://www.imby.net/easter/kids.html
What is Lent All About?
Easter is when we celebrate the rising of Jesus after his death on the cross. It is a great day: because of Easter, we don't have to be afraid, and we never have to be apart from God. But at one time, we were apart from God. We can learn about that time and about why Jesus died on the cross during a season called Lent. Lent is the forty day period leading up to Easter.
Why did Jesus have to die?
God cares that we show love for him and for all his children. When we do things that are hurtful to others or that hurt our relationship with God, we become separated from God. And when we can't be near God, our hearts are not at peace. Our hearts are not at rest. The Bible says, 'Everyone has done wrong and is far away from God' (Rom 3.23). As if that weren't bad enough, without God's help, there is no way to get back to him. Without God's help, we are lost.
But on the first Easter Sunday, God said, "Even though people have done wrong and are far from me, Jesus has let himself be punished for the wrongs of the people. Jesus took the world's trouble on himself: he died and was separated from me. My own child felt my anger instead of you. But now I am not angry anymore, and everything is forgiven. And though Jesus was dead, I have made him alive again, and we'll be together forever."
"Now," God says, "when you do something wrong and you feel like you are far from me, run to Jesus (this kind of running is not with your feet, but with your imagination). Jesus is the way back to me! Jesus has made my anger go away for ever. Run to Jesus and when you are near Him, you will be near to me also. I do love him, and I love you so very much. In fact, I love you so much that Jesus is my gift to you forever, so that whenever you are near Jesus, I will remember what he did to make my anger go away, and I will forgive you. This is how we can be close forever."
What is Lent good for? ...
God has given us a great and comforting gift. ... But it's easy to forget what God has done for us. We forget that it was because of our wrong that Jesus was punished. We can add to our wrongs when we try to make ourselves happy by eating lots of candy or junk food, by buying lots of toys or watching too much TV. We fill up with all sorts of things, always hoping that they will make us happy. We may be happy in the moment, but that kind of happiness doesn't last very long. We just end up wanting more. We are never satisfied by these things.
During Lent, many Christians try to stop filling up with all these other things. Instead, we try to make room for God again. When we do this, we feel nearer to God.
Some ways to remember what God did
Decide with an adult what you can do to make room for God. Giving up some of our comforts also helps us understand how much Jesus gave up for us. Try to give up something each week. You could have a dessert-free day, or a dessert-free week! How about going TV-free? If you give up desert, or video games, or anything that costs money, think about taking the money your family saves, and using it to help someone who has less than you. Can you think of other things you can give up? Can you think of ways to help those who are often hungry, or who are less comfortable?
Now, fill up with something good. Spend some time learning about the days before Jesus died: read the stories about Jesus' last week in your Bible. Imagine what it would have been like to be with him at that time. Do the people who were with Jesus help him? Do they understand what is happening? Right before Jesus was arrested he was very sad and needed to pray, but the friends he brought with him fell asleep. Would you have been able to stay awake?

"The sorrow in my heart is so great that it almost crushes me. Stay here and keep watch with me." (Matthew 26.38 TEV)
Hope
But as you remember the reasons Jesus died don't forget the most important thing ... Easter! Remember that Jesus was not beaten by death. Jesus has won a great victory! He is the only one that could. He is the only one strong enough to overpower death. That's why God chose him to save us.
Remember, because of what Jesus did, we don't have to be afraid, and we never have to be apart from God. Because of Easter, we have hope, and our hearts can be at rest in the presence of God!

Mom and Dad,
Inside this packet are many things I have been working on this trimester. I want to show you all of these things and tell you about what we did in class- my favorite parts and some of the things I am still learning. If you have questions about my Progress Report you should be able to see what I need more help on in this packet of my work. During these days off we need to look at my Progress Report and think of some SPECIFIC things I can do to help me, you both can do to help me, and what Mrs. Wall can do to help me be a better student at St. Lawrence. (This is the same thing we did with Mrs. Wall during our 3-way conference in October.) Mom and Dad, you should write on this paper so we can easily read what our plan of action is to help me. I can keep all of this class work and homework at home but I need to bring back the completed progress report on Monday, February 27th. Thank you Mom and Dad!
Love,
__________________________
P.S.What does this progress report tell us?
These are all of the grade level standards we have been working on this trimester.
If there is a STAR, I already know what I need to know to meet this standard.
If there is NOTHING, I am still working on this standard.
If it is YELLOW, this is what I REALLY need help with at home to do better work in class.
The LIFE LONG LEARNING SKILLS are what the plan of action should be focused on, NOT the content standards. I practice my Life Long Learning Skills EVERYDAY and I need your help to be a Super Star with these things all the time.

NEWS: Happy Teacher's Day! Thank you boys and girls for making this a happy one for Mrs. Vierra and I.
Even MORE wonderful famous heroes visited our classroom today! Thank you Helen Keller, Alexander Graham Bell, Florence Nightengale, Thomas Jefferson, Barack Obama, Rosa Parks, and Mark Twain. You all did AMAZING work with your presentations. The videos are continuing to upload. Enjoy!!
Our First Reconciliation celebration is coming up this next Wednesday night. In preparation, ALL of your work must be completed by Monday morning. If you received a butterfly or heart cut out with "Your work is complete!" written on it, you only need to go back and read your book and packet this weekend to remember the Main Ideas that are listed on page 56 in your book. If you have any ORANGE POST-ITS you need to complete your work that we discussed in class (written work) and return it on Monday morning.
WHAT TO DO IF I HAVE AN ORANGE POST-IT:

WHAT TO DO IF I HAVE AN ORANGE POST-IT:
- Read the chapter you are missing.
- Each time you read a question in the book you need to write it in your paper packet (Mom and Dad can help you write the questions.)
- Answer each question in your own words by writing it in your packet.
- Complete the Family Focus activities with your family.
- Do the At Home tasks with your family.
- Write "My Family's Thoughts" in your paper packet after you complete the activities listed above and write some things you talked about with your family that connect to this chapter.
*If it is an At Home activity that you are missing, complete the activity and return it to school on Monday as well. The "doorknob" activity if the At Home task at the end of chapter 6.

NEWS: Happy Volunteer Appreciation day!! Thank you to all of our second grade volunteers who help make a difference in our school every time you help out! We REALLY appreciate you!!
We had a G-R-E-A-T 100th day of school today! We were challenged in math with a 100th day multi-step problem! We worked hard to try and figure it out. We brainstormed 100 things we have learned in the past 100 days.
Tomorrow is Student Appreciation Day. The students may wear "Free Dress" and will be receiving a special treat of doughnuts during morning recess. There will be absolutely NO HOMEWORK TOMORROW NIGHT to celebrate our students.
We had the following Famous Heroes visit our class today: George Washington, Amelia Earhart, Michael Phelps, Orville Wright (The Wright Brothers), Ghandi, Anne Frank, Lou Gehrig, Wolfgang Mozart, John F. Kenndey, Johnny Appleseed, and Joan of Arc! They all told us so many wonderful things about themselves! Heroes, you ALL gave amazing presentations today in class!!! I am so proud of you! (Mom and Dad, if you would like to see your "hero" talk about themselves please check out the video and pictures I will be posting tonight on my Picasa account. I will email everyone the link. The newest additions are at the very bottom. Please share these with your students.)
