Sacramental Preparation

Dear Second Grade Families,

This past week we began our Sacrament preparation in class.  As discussed in the meeting you all attended, the yellow packet that was sent home and the same information that was posted on School One, your family is responsible for completing the At Home Family Focus activities each weekend.  Your child’s folder with book and reflection packet must be returned each Monday morning to school.  In class each week we will be learning about the chapters that were listed on your original paperwork.  At the end of each chapter is where you will find the At Home work you need to do together.  (This week: page 13) Please do not work ahead in the book.  Once you have discussed and completed the chapter’s content your family should write your thoughts on the final pages of the packet that is in your child’s folder.  Mom, Dad, and/or your second grade student should write a reflection at the end of this packet.

Thank you for your support with this wonderful Catholic Sacrament and helping to continue your child’s education in their faith.  Should you have any questions, please email me.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Wall

P.S. When you have completed the list of information needed by the church to complete the second grade Sacraments, please turn it in to the church’s parish office to Eleanor’s inbox.

NEWS: The Giving Tree is here! This morning the students in our class each chose an ornament from out parrish giving tree.  We talked about what it meant to take an ornament and what the students are now required to do with that ornament. Here are a couple guidelines:
  • Allow any student who wants to take a tag, but if they know their family is not able to purchase a gift, they do not need to take one. With that being said, if your child brought home an ornament and you fit in this category please return it to Mrs. Wall or the tree as soon as possible.
  • All gifts must come to school UNWRAPPED.
  • All UNWRAPPED gifts should have the ornament FROM THE GIVING TREE attached.
  • You may purchase any clothing or toy item that would be appropriate for a child of the age specified on the ornament you chose.
  • Bring all gifts to our classroom.
  • The last day to bring gifts is WEDNESDAY DEC. 14th.

Monday, October 3rd

NEWS:
Thank you Leo for bringing all of your Star Student supplies to school today. You did a great job presenting to your friends.

Tomorrow we will be doing our Blessing of the Animals during our morning announcements as a celebration for the Feast Day of Saint Frances of Assisi.  Students are welcome to bring their pets, stuffed animals, or pictures of their pets to receive a blessing from Fr. Thuc.
Mom and/or Dad MUST take the pet home with them at the conclusion of the blessing and morning announcements.
Live pets must be brought to school in a safe manner that will keep our pets safe, our friend's pets safe and all of students, staff and faculty safe.  This means ALL live pets need to come in a carrying case or on a leash.  Parents, please do not let your child take sole charge of a pet that is larger than them, as they may get excited by the variety of other animals and decide to take off. =)
In class today we talked about the kinds of pets we can bring and the students had many questions.  Please decide as a family if it would be a healthy and safe choice FOR YOUR PET to come to school.  I look forward to meeting your family pets.
Please bring a stuffed animal to be blessed if you do not have a pet.

Our next "Winter Warmth" presentation will be this Friday. I will let you know if you will  be presenting this time or the next by Wednesday.

The weather is turning colder, as we experienced today. Please come to school with appropriate clothes for cooler weather. Keep a sweatshirt and/or jacket in your backpack at all time just in case.

Thank you to everyone for signing up for your conference in the upcoming weeks.  Please remember that your student is required to attend their conference. Thank you for planning accordingly.

Individual Pictures will be sent home tomorrow...
On the reverse of every package it states, if families are not satisfied with their photograph, simply return the complete package to the photographer ON RETAKE DAY 10/20/11 when they retake their photo.

Class pictures are not included in this package, if purchased they will be delivered once all students in the class have been photographed, so please ensure your students who were not photographed on the original picture day to take their picture on makeup day.

For those student who forgot to hand in their order form the first time, this will be their opportunity to purchase pictures but they must have their order form with them. Order forms will be found online (School One) and in the office by next week.

HOMEWORK:
Religion-complete your page by EITHER writing a poem/song about something in nature your are thankful for OR draw a picture and write a prayer about something in nature you are thankful for. (Parents, this was meant to be an in class project, but many of our classmates had a difficult time listening and participating cooperatively, so we ran out of time in class.)

HRL (Home Reading Log)-You all did a GREAT job on your logs last week! Keep it up!! (Read for 20 minutes or more.)

Math-finish your 3's and 4's flashcards and practice! Bring all of your flashcards in your plastic bag, to school tomorrow.  Practice! Practice! Practice your addition facts! We will be presenting again on Friday, October 7th.  If you did not get to participate today, either by bringing something warm for Emily, or speaking, you will get a chance at some point throughout the month of October.  I already have the list of people who told me they would like a speaking part.  Please let me know if you have changed your mind about speaking at the Morning Assembly.

Donations for our Winter Warmth Service Project can be brought to school on Tuesday mornings, starting in October.  If you would like to wait and bring yours for our next presentation, that is okay too.

We started Guided Reading and Literacy Centers today! Hooray!! It was a great first day for our second graders! Congratulations on a job well done students! Parents, are you wondering what this is? Winter Warmth Service Project

Hi Second Grade Families,

Tomorrow morning we will be presenting a short skit to introduce our Service Project, "Winter Warmth."  We will be making announcements about this service project throughout the month of October.  This is a shared project with the third grade class.  The announcement schedule between the classes will be as follows:

9/26-2nd (Mon.)
10/3-3rd
10/7-2nd (Fri.)
10/17-3rd
10/24-2nd (Mon.)

As I talked with the students in class on Friday, each student who would like to participate, will get a chance at least once throughout the month.  As for tomorrow...

Emily will be our "freezing friend" who is in need of some "winter warmth."
Kate will inform everyone of what to donate.
Connor will tell them what we are aiming for.
Alexis will tell everyone when this starts.

*Each time it's our turn we will do a similar announcement with updates and different students from our classroom.  I'll let you know when it's your turn, if you want to participate by speaking at the Morning Assembly.

ALL STUDENTS, FOR TOMORROW: If you are planning to bring something to keep Emily warm (to donate) tomorrow you can also be a part of the skit!  When Emily comes out of the classroom and stops on the grass in front of the student council you can come up and help her put on ONE item that you brought.  I'll go first so you can see what you should do, but remember what we practiced in class on Friday aslo.  We need to start with the smaller things first, so take a look at what you brought to donate and watch to see when a good time to add something would be.  We want to keep adding items to Emily until we can't see HER at all, only the things that she is wearing because so many people have donations to give her. When you are ready to give her something, walk up to the front after the last person and say something to her as you put it on.  You could say something like, "I hope this keeps you warm." or "I hope you'll be warm with this." or "I hope this helps!" Be creative with what you want to say.  After Emily thanks you or replies to your donation, please say "YOU'RE WELCOME!" nice and loud so ALL can hear!

Don't worry if you can't make a donation tomorrow.  We will be doing this service project the whole month of October, so you have plenty of time to find that Winter Warmth you are willing to part with.

Thank you,

Mrs. Wall

Friday, September 23rd

NEWS: Gerry, thank you for doing such a wonderful job on your Star Student presentations throughout the week! You rock! It was wonderful to hear you read to us and to see everyone listen so intently to your book.

Chantel, please bring all of your Star Student supplies on Monday for your week!

HOMEWORK: Please read for 20 minutes or more each day this weekend.  You do not have any HRL over the weekend (yet). Great work to those students who completed their HRL (Home Reading Log) all week long! What a great way to start off!

Today in class we talked about the gospel for this upcoming Sunday. It is all about the choices we make everyday in our lives.  Please share your paper with your family and talk about the good and bad choices you make everyday.  How can you change those "bad" choices to be "good" ones at home and at school? How do your choices effect your life? How do your choices efffect the lives of others around you?
