LOTS going on in second grade!

THIS WEEK

Monday we are working on finishing up all of our ongoing projects before we leave for the holiday break.

Wednesday is our Buddy Mass and our Christmas party (11:00-12:15). Please join us if you can for these fun events. Make sure to check in to the front office if you are coming to the classroom at any time. Thank you. Wednesday is also a Non-Uniform day.  Please remember when you are coming to school in regular clothes that this is a Mass day and you must dress nicely.  You can refer to the Student/Parent Handbook if you are unsure of what to wear.  If you wear something that is inappropriate for Mass, your family will have to come to school with different clothes for you and you will not be participating in our exciting holiday activities. Thank you.

FIRST RECONCILIATION PREPARATION

We have completed the first four chapters of preparation for this Sacrament.  PLEASE take the time with your family to complete the first four chapters before Christmas vacation (it was all due today).  Our celebration is coming soon and we would love for everyone to be able to celebrate with us.  You must have this work done in order to celebrate First Reconciliation.

FIELD TRIP

Mrs. Wall made a mistake! Our field trip is MONDAY, JANUARY 7TH, not the 17th. A new field trip permission slip will be coming home today. We only need your information and signatures on this form to acknowledge that it is Monday, January 7th that we will be away from school. Please return this form as soon as possible. We are able to take four parent volunteers with us to the play on this day.

VOLUNTEERS AT SLEMS

Please be aware that the new diocese requirements are that you must be cleared with fingerprints, TB Test and the SAFE Environment course (online) for the remainder of the school year, effective January 1st, 2013, if you would like to volunteer in the classroom or be working with the students in any capacity. Thank you so much!

Keeping Us Germ-Free

We have been lucky so far this year to stay pretty healthy in second grade.  We have used all of the baby/hand wipes that everyone brought to school at the beginning of the year. Tomorrow the students will receive a note requesting that each student bring in two packages of baby or hand wipes (NOT Clorox wipes) so we can continue to stay healthy and germ free. Thank you so much!

Clifford's Birthday Card

Boys and Girls, if you would like to do this as we talked about in class, we need to have our materials here by Friday. Please bring whatever you have to contribute to our card and we will do the picture on Friday. Thank you.

HOMEWORK
We had a GREAT first week of the second trimester with our homework packets! Thank you for your wonderful responsibility second graders.  Please remember that www.raz-kids.com and www.mathletics.com is a part of your daily homework as well. You should read and do math every night with these websites.  Thirteen of our students completed their Raz-Kids reading last week. Great job!

Wish List
Moms and Dads,
You may have seen or read the Wish List for our class.  If you are thinking about purchasing something for our classroom we would love the geared clocks however, we no longer need the tables. Another great item would be a small classroom pocket heat laminator. They sell them at Costco, Staples, Lakeshore Learning Store, etc. for between $20-$50.

First Trimester Done!

Dear Second Grade Families,

We are one-third of our way through second grade! I can't believe this year is going so fast already.  Please return the ORANGE form that was stapled to your report card TOMORROW. If you have any comments or questions, please write them on this form and return it to school. Thank you so much.

Now that we are in our second trimester we will be focusing more on the responsibility of TEAMWORK! How do you work with others? Are you a problem solver? How do show cooperation with your classmates? Please think about these questions over the next couple weeks.  We will be doing more group work and teamwork in class.

See you all tomorrow morning.

Love,

Mrs. Wall

P.S. Please turn in your field trip form as soon as possible. Thank you!

This week in second grade...

Good Evening,

This week we have some exciting things happening in second grade. Check out what we will be doing in class so you are prepared and ready for this full week of school!

HOMEWORK

Everything is back to "normal" with homework. We will be starting a new HRL this trimester. Everything will look the same, but there will be new responses for you to complete. We will talk about it in class so you know what to do. Please continue to read for 20 minutes or more each week.

If you received a PINK HRL you are responding each night to the questions. We will talk about each new one in class each day this week.

If you received an ORANGE HRL you need to tell me more.  There is more space for you to explain why you think this and give me more information to show me that you understand and remember what you have read. If this is hard for you to remember each night, you may not be reading a "just right" book.

Thank you to Allison, An, Avery, Cassie, Celeste, Denise, Jae-Joon, Jasmine G., Jasmine Q., Jyeron, Kevin, Maria, Mike, Stephen, Sydney and Vincent who completed their homework last week! You are AWESOME!!!

FIRST RECONCILIATION PREP

We will continue our learning about First Reconciliation.  Please remind Mom and Dad to set aside time each Sunday to work on this important Sacrament work. As part of our Sacrament preparation we are discussing fun things to do with our families.  So, we have a fun game for your family to play...the Gabbit is coming home TODAY! Each family will receive one day over the come weeks to play with our Gabbit.  This is a fun family game meant for the car.  There are only two rules:

1. Everyone present MUST play and participate.
2. Every time you are in the car you need to play (to and from school). You can play other places also if you'd like to.

This week the following families should be expecting the Gabbit:
Celeste & An
Kevin & Allison
Denise & Aidan
Sydney & Jyeron
Jae-Joon & Aryana

You each have ONE DAY with the Gabbit. Please bring it back to school the next day so our next family can have a turn to play.

ABC SUPERSTARS

You have been working hard all month.  We will be celebrating your kindness and caring action on Friday afternoon.

Multicultural Grandparents Day Tomorrow!

Multicultural Grandparents Day

We are so excited for this special event! Parents, please bring your food in the morning directly to the Community Center and find the second grade table.  Please set it up so it is ready for the students to serve themselves.  We will be using teaspoons as serving spoons because we'd like each student and grandparent to get a small taste and leave some for others.

We are asking that one grandparent or special person from each family attend this special event (per child) as our space will be limited.  If a grandparent can not attend it is okay because we will be partnering together with our friends to share the grandparent experience.

As stated in the previous letter you received, if you would like any dishes returned to you, please write your family name on all pieces and grade your student is in so we can get everything back to you.

Thank you for your participation in this fun event.

Homework for This Week

Each day (at least five days this week) you will need to complete your reading at www.raz-kids.com and one gold bar at www.mathletics.com. There is only ONE second grade student who has met our goal for one-minute math, so EVERYONE should be practicing with Live Mathletics and flashcards every night. Read AT LEAST 20 minutes every day.

First Reconciliation Preparation

Thank you to the families who completed their family homework over the weekend! If you did not turn yours in this morning, PLEASE bring it tomorrow. This is a responsibility that you have as a family to complete this important Sacrament.

Tomorrow you will be taking home your book to complete the family activities.  Please remind Mom and Dad that this is FAMILY HOMEWORK and they need to do it WITH YOU! First Reconciliation Preparation

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Second Grade Sacraments
St. Lawrence Elementary
Dear Second Grade Families,

As I shared with all of you at Back to School Night, second grade is a very important year for our students as Catholics. This year we will be celebrating the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. We will be learning about each of these in class. Each family will also be required to complete projects at home on a weekly basis. The projects will be centered on each sacrament we are learning about and will need to be completed at home and brought to school to share.
This week we are beginning our Sacrament preparation in class for First Reconciliation (First Penance). As discussed in the meeting you all attended with Mrs. De Paz, the packet that was sent home and the same information that was posted on School One, your family is responsible for completing the registration information and weekly At Home Family Focus
activities each week. Your child will receive a folder and book in class today. These materials will be sent home each Thursday or Friday and must be completed and returned each Monday morning to school. In class each week we will be learning about the chapters that were listed on your original paperwork. At the end of each chapter is where you will find the At Home work you need to do together. Please do not work ahead in the book. Once you have discussed and completed the chapter’s content your family should write your thoughts on the final pages of the chapter where there is space on the pages titled We Respond. Mom, Dad, and your second grade student should write a reflection together about your thoughts from this content.
Some families have already expressed that they are not planning on having their child make these Catholic sacraments. For these families, the At Home activities are optional and may be completed if you’d like. Please inform Mrs. Wall as soon as possible if you are not Catholic and/or your family is not planning on participating in these celebrations for any reason if you have not done so already. Please make Mrs. Wall aware of your situation as soon as possible so we can start any preparations that may be required for your family, especially any Baptisms that need to happen before First Reconciliation.
Thank you for your support with this wonderful Catholic Sacrament and helping to continue your child’s education in their faith. We look forward to these important celebrations in your child’s Catholic life should you have any questions, please email me.
Sincerely,

Mrs. Jill Wall
jwall@saintlawrence.org

P.S. When you have completed the list of information needed by the church to complete the second grade Sacraments, please turn it in to the church’s parish office to Eleanor’s inbox.

Monday, October 15th

NEWS: Tomorrow will be our first "live" announcement for the October Service Project outside during morning announcements! Practice the words tonight if you don't know it by heart.  We will ALL be singing for the whole school. Great singing this morning!

We will be having a Social Studies test on Friday.  You need to know where all of the continents are, what the three important countries in North America are, the four main directions, what the bodies of water and landforms look like on a map. You can use your notebook and maps to help you get ready for the test.

HOMEWORK: Our next homework packet came home today.  Do your best on each page to complete it by following directions. Mom and Dad should look at your completed work each night to see that you followed directions.

Check out our Dinosaur Webquest by clicking here: http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/de/webquests/dino/dinowq.htm
On your purple packet, write down your top 3 choices for your dinosaur and bring it back to school tomorrow. We will be working on this project in class over the next couple weeks.

YOU SHOULD BE READING THIS WEBSITE EVERYDAY WITH MOM AND DAD SO YOU AND THEY KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON AT SCHOOL.

Sunday, October 14th

Hello Everyone,

Thank you all for great conferences this past week.  It was so nice to meet with all of our second grade families and make plans for how we can be our very BEST in second grade! I am excited to see all of the changes that will be happening with each of you at home and at school with your new responsibility as second graders.

CANDY!!!! We will make our first announcement over the loud speaker tomorrow morning once all of the students go to their classes.  If you are doing a "solo" please be ready to sing with your loud voices.  Mom and Dad, you are welcome to stay on campus (in our classroom) to hear our first performance.  Then, on Tuesday and Thursday the WHOLE CLASS will be singing at morning announcements for the school and showing off the giant candy we made.  Mom and Dad, please join us for morning announcements on these days. Thanks for your hard work with our service project! You are going to do great!

Love,

Mrs. Wall =)

Homework is different this week! Check it out!

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Like I said in class today, our weekly homework is different this week.  We DO NOT have a homework packet.  Your homework will be about what you talk with Mrs. Wall during your conference.  SECOND GRADERS MUST ATTEND the conferences as YOU are leading it and telling us all about second grade.  Mom and Dad, please do not come alone! Bring your second grader with you.

In addition to your conference homework you need to continue to do these EVERY night:

HRL-Read for 20 minutes and complete your HRL
Mathletics-earn one gold bar
Raz-Kids-read and listen to one book

See you this afternoon or tomorrow!

Love,

Mrs. Wall

Thursday, October 4, 2012

Hi Boys and Girls,

Thank you for a great day! I hope you enjoy these three days with your family.  Please start to practice our CANDY song this weekend. We will be having in class "auditions" for the verses at the beginning.  We'll pick a couple students for each verse to sing it at morning announcements throughout the month of October.  Have fun!

Next week EVERYDAY we have early dismissal at 12:30.  Boys and girls, please be thinking about how you can be a better student at St. Lawrence.  I will be asking you to share your ideas at your conference.  Mom and Dad, please don't forget that your second grade student MUST COME WITH YOU to our conference this coming week. Thank you all for signing up on time!

Congratulations again boys and girls for donating the most school supplies in all of elementary! It was fun to see you learning in your "street clothes" today.

Here are the lyrics to our song if you lost them already.

Love, Mrs. Wall

DONATE CANDY!!

By Mr. Wall =)
to the tune of Call Me Maybe

They threw some Pez in a sack
Twizzlers, two to a pack
I ate Snickers for a snack
And now my tummy hurts

I trade my Nerds for two Twix
Smarties and Mars for a Kiss
I wasn’t looking for this
But now my teeth are black

Milk Duds I’m holding
Jelly Beans pile is growing
Red Hots, candy’s flowing
What to do with all this candy?

Hey, I just got it, and this is crazy
There’s troops in need, so donate candy.
It’s hard to go fight for your country
There’s troops in need, so donate candy!

Hey, I just got it, and this is crazy
There’s troops in need, so donate candy.
It’s hard to go fight for your country
There’s troops in need, so donate candy!
Took time to trick-or-treat
Halloween was o so sweet
Way too much candy to eat, why not give it away?
I beg, borrow and deal
The gold coin wasn’t real
Ate M&M’s for a meal, please take it away!

Milk Duds I’m holding
Jelly Beans, pile is growing
Red Hots, candy’s flowing
What to do with all this candy?

Hey, I just got it, and this is crazy
There’s troops in need, so donate candy.
It’s hard to go fight for your country
There’s troops in need, so donate candy!
Hey, I just got it, and this is crazy
There’s troops in need, so donate candy.
It’s hard to go fight for your country
There’s troops in need, so donate candy!
Before I gave it away I felt so bad
I felt so bad, I felt so so bad
But now the troops overseas will be so glad
They’ll be so glad, grateful and so so glad.

It’s hard to go fight for your country
There’s troops in need, so donate candy!

Sunday, September 23rd

Good Afternoon Boys and Girls,

We are going to have another great week in second grade!  We are nearing the end of September, our first full month together.  I have already seen you show your knowledge and you are doing great.

Please take some time each night to practice for our Ice Cream Math. This will be our last week of in class practice. (Mom and Dad, one of the first 2nd grade standards we have been working on in class is memorizing the addition facts from 0-20.  The students have been completing "Ice Cream Math" in which they have one minutes to complete 30 addition problems.  Each time they complete one page in the allotted time, they can move up to the next number. We have made flashcards in class to practice and they have been asked to practice this at home as well.)

This month I have been looking for TWO students who have shown RESPONSIBILITY and CREATIVE THINKING as our Students of the Month for second grade. Have you let Mrs. Wall know through your actions at school that YOU are that person? I hope so! (Parents, you are all welcome to join us on Friday morning for this school wide assembly to celebrate the accomplishments of our students. 8:10 in the Community Center)

If you went to St. Lawrence in first grade, you can work at www.mathletics.com with your ID and password from last year.  (Mom and Dad, unfortunately I am still waiting to get our new Mathletics information from our Math coordinator at school. I apologize sincerely for the delay.  Once I gain access to our second graders accounts I will be updating them with appropriate and hopefully challenging work for the students to work on. Thank you again for your patience.)

We will be celebrating our September ABC Superstars on Friday afternoon.  Great work this month boys and girls!

Your Teacher,

Mrs. Wall

PS-Parents, homework will continue to be sent home on Mondays and needs to be returned on Friday morning.  Please take time each night to see that your student has completed their work in its entirety and you have signed the front page once it is complete.  Finally, as part of our speaking standards for 2nd grade, the students are being assessed on Thursdays of their knowledge of the poem that is sent home each Monday afternoon. So far they have all done pretty well. =)

Thursday, September 20th

Good Evening Boys and Girls,

Thank you for an AMAZING day in second grade today! It was so great to see you being such good listeners and so responsible. Way to go! Don't forget to finish your homework packet tonight and have Mom or Dad sign it so you can bring it to school tomorrow.  Keep reading on www.raz-kids.com every night.  You can use your Raz-Kids books to complete your HRL or you can read another book if you want.

Thank you,

Mrs. Wall

P.S. Mom and Dad, please talk with your child about their classroom job.  There are a few jobs that require students to be in the classroom before or after school each day.  They will need your help to get to school early each morning or your patience to wait a couple minutes after school each day. Thank you!

Hi Boys and Girls,

Great work on our testing today! You have been doing a fantastic job by showing what you know.  Tomorrow we will be working on the test after lunch.  Please bring a healthy lunch tomorrow or think about choosing healthy things if you are getting lunch at school.

Good start this week on your HRL. Remember to write your sentences on the front of the page. The back just tells you how to begin your writing each night. Please keep your HRL in your Take Home folder and bring it to school everyday.

Get your minds and hearts ready for Mass in the morning.  Think about who you would like to pray for during this time. Did your family know about the Apostles? See you in the morning.

Love.

The test will be about reading, writing, spelling, listening, math, science, and social studies.  The most important thing about your test is that YOU do your BEST each time we are working.  You need to show me what you know about these things by answering the questions. I know you will do great!

Your first HRL (Home Reading Log) is due tomorrow.  Please make sure you are writing on the front side of the paper.  You need to write the title of your book, the minutes you read, and the sentence from the back. After you have done that each day, ask Mom or Dad to sign it.

We are going to the library tomorrow. Please bring your library book. See you all in the morning!

Thank you,

Mrs. Wall

Homework Packets and HRL

Dear Boys and Girls,

This one is for Mom and Dad too! Please ask them to read it with you and answer any questions you have.

Thank you,

Mrs. Wall  =)

Dear Second Grade Families,

Today is the first official day of homework! It was great to see so many of our students already adding www.raz-kids.com to their daily routines last week.  Mathletics is coming soon. I will keep you posted as soon as I know more.  Today your student received their first homework packet.  Packets are always due on FRIDAY.  The students should complete one page each night according to the schedule on the cover page.  Please remind your student to write their name on the line that says, " I, __________, completed my homework the best I know how." AFTER all pages are complete.  Please sign the bottom as well, AFTER all work is complete.

The students were asked today to ALWAYS keep this packet in their Take Home Folder so it comes back to school with them every day.  Students are welcome to turn homework in early on Thursday, but not before. All of the work in the packets will be about things the students have already learned in class.  Homework is used as a tool for responsibility and recall of learning that has already occurred.  The only not-written work is the poetry.  Please work with your child to memorize this poem.

In addition to the homework packets, the students received their first HRL (Home Reading Log).  This should stay in their Take Home Folder at all times as well.  The students will answer the question on the back of the page after reading for 20+ minutes (at www.raz-kids.com or a "real" book).  They should copy the sentence prompt that is written for them onto the front of the page. (i.e. Today they will write, "Some interesting details are________.") We will be learning more about this in class each day. Please sign your initials AFTER your student has completed their reading and writing about their book.

Thank you for your support with this homework and continued guidance towards independence and responsibility.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Wall

Tuesday, August 21st

Good Afternoon (Buenas Tardes),

Today all of the students received their www.raz-kids.com usernames and passwords.  This information is glued/tapes into their Take Home Folder.  This folder must be returned to school EVERYDAY! Please make it part of your daily routine to look in the Take Home Folder for any important information that will be coming home.

Your student learned today in class what they need to do at www.raz-kids.com at home every night.  I'll refresh Mom and Dad at our Back to School Night of the second grade expectations for this wonderful resource.  In short, your student needs to be reading online at www.raz-kids.com everyday.

Tomorrow is the last day to turn in the Student/Parent Handbook form and the Technology Agreement in order to receive a Non-Uniform Dress Pass for this Friday.  Please turn them into Mrs. Wall tomorrow morning.  There are many students who still need to turn them in. You can find these forms and reading at our school website and should have also received them via email from St. Lawrence.  Thank you all so much!

St. Lawrence Student Creed

As a student of Saint Lawrence, I solemnly promise to work hard and always try my best.

I believe I can use Jesus’ teachings to become a better student.

I will achieve by studying and working hard on my assignments.

I will succeed and become a good citizen of the world and a better follower of Jesus Christ.

Welcome to 2nd grade!

Sunday, August 12th

Dear Second Grade Families,
Welcome to our 2012-2013 school year at St. Lawrence! We are so excited you are here with us and eager to get to know each and every one of you.  It is going to be a wonderful year in second grade!  I am Mrs. Jill Wall, your second grade teacher.  This year we are blessed to have Mrs. Laure Vierra with us in our classroom as a full-time instructional assistant as well.
School begins in only a few days so start getting back into your routine of going to bed early and waking up early with a healthy breakfast.  Our first day is Thursday, August 16th.  Please be early that morning as you should bring all of your supplies with you.  We will meet out on the blacktop where our normal morning assembly is, which is behind our classroom.  Our class supply list is on our SchoolOne website https://dsj.schoolone.com/.  Please come with everything you need on Thursday morning.  Also, start thinking about one (or more) of the books you read this summer and write down the title and author so you can share something about this interesting book with your new classmates during the first couple days of school.
Independence and responsibility are our two main goals for this school year.  You will hear me talk a lot about this throughout the school year and you’ll get to see your children grow into independent learners and responsible citizens as they learn more about the world around them.  You will get the most information about what is going on at school everyday through our classroom website, so please sign up to “follow” me as soon as possible. http://wall2stlawrence.blogspot.com/
Back to School Night is coming soon as well.  Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 28th (evening) for a fun and informational night about second grade.  All PARENTS are welcome and encouraged to come as this will give you the most information about our school year together and answer any and all questions you ma have.  This will also be our introduction to Sacramental preparation.  In the meantime you should be able to find information at our school homepage   http://www.saintlawrence.org/slem/ .
We look forward to starting this new adventure with you! Enjoy the final days of your vacation. See you soon!

Sincerely,
